The Sound Of Music - A Great Family Musical
The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre was the Broadway home of the original musical production of The Sound Of Music which opened on November 16, 1959. This musical was the last collaboration by Rogers and Hammerstein. Oscar Hammerstein II died only nine short months after the show opened on Broadway. The original stars of the Broadway production were Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. The Broadway production was followed by a London production in 1961 at the Palace Theatre, which starred Jean Bayliss and Roger Dann. There was also an Australian production at the Melbourne Princess Theatre which opened in 1961. This production starred June Bronhill and Peter Graves. There have been numerous revivals of this wonderful musical throughout the world. In 2009, there is a tour scheduled in the United Kingdom. It is scheduled to open on July 26th at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
