Fiddler On The Roof A Great "Tradition"

My school did this musical last Spring...it was a great experience...We all loved the music...

Fiddler On The Roof opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in 1964. The book was written by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock, with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. After an almost three year run at the Imperial, Fiddler On The Roof moved to The Majestic Theatre only to be moved again in 1970 to The Broadway Theatre. In total it ran for a whopping 3,242 performances. The original production was directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and produced by Harold Prince.

The show was nominated for a total of ten Tony Awards and won nine of them including; Best Musical, which it won in 1965 along with Best Book, Best Score, Best Direction of A Musical and Best Choreography.

The title of this musical evolved in a very interesting way. The story goes that Marc Chagall, the famous painter, created a series of paintings in which he depicted Eastern European Jewish Life. In these paintings he included a fiddler, which symbolizes survival. Originally, the play was entitled Tevye but it was decided to use the more marketable name Fiddler on The Roof(after getting the idea from the Chagall paintings) prior to the Broadway opening.
